Fake Virus / Spyware Pop-up
Thursday, February 18, 2010 I have come across a few users with a virus issue and thought I would send out a warning for the rest of you. First things first – DO NOT CLICK ON E-MAIL LINKS OR ATTACHMENTS. Unless it is from someone you absolutely trust. Even then, be wary. Next, if you get a pop-up or notification about a virus or spyware, DO NOT click on anything. The act of clicking on ANYTHING in that pop-up can tell the malware to install. Once that has happened, all bets are off. Restart your computer immediately. If you continue to have pop-ups, leave it as-is and call Mox Technology or your local tech person. If you have this problem on your home computer, here is an article on how to remove this specific piece of malware. This may not cure your malware problem. Usually a Google search of your symptoms will find another helpful source.
Personally, I never trust a computer that has been infected with malware. The people that write this stuff are just too smart these days; There is too much money to be made. When you think you have the malware cleaned, it can be hiding dormant and pop up at a later date. In my opinion, the only way to regain trust in your computer and successfully remove malware is to format the computer and re-install your operating system and programs.
To help protect yourself from this and other malware, keeping your computer up-to-date is vital. Make sure Windows update is turned on and set to install automatically. High-risk software such as Adobe Acrobat, Java, and Internet Explorer should also be kept current.
If you think you have malware on your computer, contact Mox Technology today to set up an appointment for virus / spyware removal.
